This formal manner of certification is most commonly used for the purpose of making documents ‘official’ and accepted for overseas use by high authority organisations.

Notarisation also provides accountability in terms of the translator’s details as they must swear to the concerned Notary Public that their translation is accurate and true.

The Notary’s signature cannot endorse the quality of the translation unless that person is a qualified ITI member in the language of the translation.

About ‘sworn’ translations:

Please note that, although this is a popular term within the translation industry, ‘sworn translation’ is not a recognised standard in the UK.

Depending on the country, only those who are listed on the official list of sworn translators may produce a ‘certified’, ‘sworn’ or ‘official’ translation. If in doubt, please seek advice from Embassy of the target country.
